Marouane Fellaini had a dreadful first season for Manchester United. He was so poor that it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if Louis van Gaal cuts his losses and sells the Belgian before next season even begins.
Whilst you could try and excuse his form by pointing that he had just changed clubs, the fact he was following David Moyes from Everton diminishes that argument somewhat. Moyes knew all about Fellaini’s capabilities, what motivated him and where he played best, yet the midfielder struggled to make any positive impact in 2013-2014.
As frustrating as his performances were for United fans, it was hardly the best preparation for Fellaini’s World Cup campaign either.
He had been a familiar fixture in Marc Wilmots’ Belgium team but lost out on a starting place in their opening game of the tournament against Algeria. The Belgians went a goal down after conceding a penalty in the first half and struggled to find a way back in to the game which they later won 2-1.
